Praying for Our Children’s Safety: 7 Powerful Prayers for Protection

October 9, 2024

As moms, whether new or seasoned, one of our deepest desires is to see our children safe, thriving, and growing into the people God created them to be. But in a world that often feels uncertain, it’s easy to feel worried about their well-being and it can be quite overwhelming, to say the least. That’s where the power of prayer comes in.

The Bible reminds us that we can approach God with confidence, trusting that He hears our cries and that He cares even more deeply for our children than we do.

In this post, I want to share 7 specific prayers you can pray over your children—prayers that cover their physical, emotional, and spiritual safety.

As you pray, know that you are placing your precious ones into the hands of a loving and sovereign God who is fully capable of protecting them.

1. Prayer for Physical Protection

“The Lord will keep you from all harm—He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” —Psalm 121:7-8 (NIV)

Heavenly Father, I ask You to place a hedge of protection around my child today. Guard them as they go out and come in, and keep them from all evil. Whether at school, at the park, or wherever they go, be with them and keep them safe. Help them to be aware of their surroundings and give them wisdom to navigate any dangerous situation. Help me to not fear and to trust in Your protection. In Jesus’ name, amen.

2. Prayer for Emotional Protection

“When anxiety was great within me, Your consolation brought me joy.” —Psalm 94:19 (NIV)

Dear Lord, I lift up my child’s emotions to You. Guard their hearts and minds from fear, anxiety, and any negativity they might try to creep in and take root. Comfort them when they are not feeling their best and help them to experience Your joy and peace, even when it’s hard. Let them always know that You are near even when they can’t feel You, and help me to guide them with love and understanding. In Jesus’ name, amen.

3. Prayer for Spiritual Protection

“But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.” —2 Thessalonians 3:3 (NIV)

Father God, protect my child from any spiritual attacks or temptations that could lead them away from You. I pray that they will be sensitive to Your Spirit and recognize Your truth. Surround them with godly influences, friends who encourage them to grow in their faith, and mentors who point them to You. Keep their hearts pure and their minds focused on what is good and true. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

4. Prayer for Protection from Peer Pressure

“Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” —1 Corinthians 15:33 (NIV)

Dear Lord, I pray that You will guard my child from negative influences and peer pressure. Give them the courage to stand firm in their beliefs. Give them the discernment to choose friends who build them up rather than tear them down. Help them to be a light to those around them and to always remember who they are in Christ Jesus, even when they feel pressured to conform to the ways of the world. In Jesus name, Amen.

5. Prayer for Safety in the Face of Bullies

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.” —Psalm 18:2 (NIV)

Father God, I ask You to protect my child from bullying and anyone who would seek to harm them emotionally or physically. Be their refuge and strength when they are being challenged by others. Remind them that they are never alone, even when they feel lonely. Help them to respond to bullies with grace and courage. And if they ever feel afraid, remind them that there is no need to fear because you are their defender. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

6. Prayer for Protection Over Their Thoughts

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” —Romans 12:2 (ESV)

Lord God, please guard my child’s mind against thoughts that are not from You. Help them to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. Replace any thoughts of doubt, insecurity or confusion with Your truth. Let their minds be filled with things that are noble, pure, and praiseworthy. Help them meditate on Your Word so that their thoughts will be aligned with Your will.  In Jesus’ name, amen.

7. Prayer for Protection of Their Future

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” —Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV)

Heavenly Father, I commit my child’s future into Your hands. I pray that You would go before them, preparing the way for every step they will take. Protect their future from the schemes of the enemy, and keep them firmly rooted in Your purpose for their life. Let them grow into the person You’ve called them to be, walking in Your promises and fulfilling the plans You have for them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Be Encouraged

As you pray these prayers over your child, remember that God hears every word and knows every concern in your heart. There is power in a praying parent, and there’s no prayer too big or too small for Him to answer. Continue to lift your child up daily, trusting that the One who loves them most will watch over and protect them.
